1960s Mid Century Modern Gustavo Skinfill Huichol style Yarn Painting Mexico MCM

Description: Modernist 1960s Yarn Painting attributed to academically-trained Mexican artist Gustavo Skinfill Morán of Mexico City, Mexico (1932 - 1976). I have collected many of Skinfill's yarn paintings and base my attribution on his recognizable yarn application technique, choice of subject matter and design, materials, and framing. Skinfill applied traditional Huichol yarn painting techniques to his creation of Mondernist designs, blending his academic training with traditional Huichol cultural art traditions. (See brief Artist biography below) This artwork, executed in plied fiber yarns adhered to a Masonite type panel, in frame, measures approximately 24.5 inches height x 19 inches width; the frame is about 1 inch thickness. The backing on which the yarn painting is assembled appears to be a composition board (similar to Masonite). This board has an integrated exposed woven textile outer layer. What appear to be weaving joins in that textile created in manufacture run the width of the board - see overall and detail photo. The frame was not constructed to hold a protective glass covering. As a result the yarn surface has some minor soiling from exposure over time. I did not attempt to clean it. There are several areas where the yarn ends or small areas are slightly elevated above the work's face plane. I have included representative images so you can see what I am attempting to describe. Artist biographical notes: Gustavo Skinfill (1932 - 1976) was born June 18, 1932 in Mexico City, to parents Catalina Morán and Juan Skinfill. He studied art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, and at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving ("La Esmeralda"). He was one of four sons (Gustavo, Juan, Arturo, and Mauricio Skinfill) born to the couple. His brother, Mauricio Skinfill, also was an artist, though not academically trained. Gustavo married Catalina Guzmán Román and was father to four children from that marriage. The artist died at age 44 in Toluca, Mexico, as the result of an automobile accident. (Biographical information provided in private correspondence to this author by Ana Grisell Palomino Skinfill, the artist's granddaughter.) In addition to creating a number of signed or attributed yarn paintings in the Modernist style utilizing Huichol traditional techniques, Mexican artist Gustavo Skinfill Morán also worked in ceramic mosaics, and painted in oils. His architectural installations include a publicly accessible mosaic wall mural at the entrance to 278 Filmore in Cherry Creek, Denver, Colorado, commissioned circa 1964 by Dr. Joel Mosko, the building's designer and owner (Corinne Brown, "Do You Know This Work of Art?" Cherry Creek Now (Late Summer 2015) 23-25).
