Description: Antique large (approx. 2-3/16" tall with bale/loop) Orthodox Cross pendant featuring ornate iconic design with image of Saint Barbara (Varvara in the Orthodox tradition) depicted holding a chalice and a sword symbolizing her martyrdom. The icon is marked with two Cyrillic letters, “C.B.”, initials of Saint Varvara. St. Barbara was an early Christian (c. 3rd century) Greek Martyr Saint. She is venerated as one of the "Fourteen Holy Helpers", and a patron Saint of artillery, missile and air defense military specialists, armorers, firemen, mathematicians, chemical engineers, and miners. The Cross offered for sale appears to have been made from bronze or similar historical copper alloy. Origin likely circa late 19th - early 20th century Imperial Russia. The item shows significant signs of wear consistent with its suggested age, such as reduced quality of artwork, deformations of the original shape and dents, scratches or superficial cracks, and patches of patina/oxidation. Most of the original thick patina has been removed using a complex procedure of cleaning and polishing.
