Description: Boulou tribe (Bulu) gorilla ritual effigy figure. Early 20 th century. Solid carved bar wood. Red and white pigment. Woven fiber basket. Hyena hide and traces of feathers. Brass and plastic ornament necklace. Total hight without stand 20”. Stand not included in sale. Carving is 15” tall, widest is 9 1/2”. Basket is 12” x 12” radius and 6 1/2” tall. Original piece used for ceremonial purposes. Not tourist art. The Boulou are part of the Fang people. Situated between Gabon and Cameroon. The Boulou practiced the Ngil ritual of protection, To protect from poisoning and witchcraft. Ngi is the gorilla which the Boulou identifies with after he has been accepted into the secret society. On the back of the effigy is cutout where there would by gorilla hair tied or attached to a nail or nails. Museum piece example.
