Description: Here is a lovely complete set of Edgar Allan Poe's works, published in 1902 by Crowell in half leather and marbled boards. It is the complete 17 volume set edited by James Harrison of the University of Virginia, with this edition bound in 11 volumes. Each volume is illustrated with a frontispiece and assorted other illustrations, all protected by labeled tissue guards. Bound in 1/2 tan calf with ribbed floral decorated spines, gilt lettered green and brown morocco spine labels, top edges gilt and others uncut, marbled pastedowns and endpapers. The set includes all of Poe's tales and poetry, as well as his letters, literary criticism, essays and other miscellaneous writings. In addition there is a complete biography and a critical study of Poe's works. The overall condition is Good to Very Good. Externally the leather and marbled boards on all of the volumes is rubbed at the edges, spine tips, corners and joints. Spine ends show some flaking and minor splits. There is moderate scuffing to the leather and boards, including on the spines. The attractive spine gilt is still bright, and all of the spine labels remain intact. On Vol. IX, a small piece of the leather at the bottom is beginning to peel away--see the photo. The bottom spine compartment of each volume shows the "ghost" of a small spine label. The front pastedown of each volume has an old ownership label affixed with a name and a code of "G254." There is no other evidence of ownership, and no stamps or other markings indicating that this set was in a public or institutional library. Front hinges of several volumes are cracked but all the bindings are tight and holding. Internally the volumes are generally clean with just an occasional spot or smudge. In some volumes there are pages that remain unopened, indicating the volume has not been read. The only significant internal defect appears to be in Vol. VIII, where nearly half a page of text has been torn away on p.7/8. There is also a gouge in the margin of pp. 141-145, but it does not impact any text. See the photos. Despite the faults mentioned, this remains a handsome example of a scarce set of Poe, in a most attractive binding.
