Framework 13 CONVERSION KIT to iMac-like form | Flying Lotus

Description: IMPORTANT: Current batch ships the week of April 15th This Flying Lotus is a KIT designed to use parts from a Framework 13" laptop, and transform it into an more versatile Portable Workstation. You need to order the electronics from Framework's website, and install them in. But it only takes a few screws and 20 minutes to build a unique portable computer that's much more ergonomic and versatile than a laptop, and infinitely more repairable and upgradeable than any tablet or 2 in 1. With the included stand, the screen sits at eye-level instead of table-level, reducing neck-strain. It doesn't have a keyboard attached, which in addition of letting you choose a keyboard of your own, allows the screen to be mounted on most places where a tablet can be mounted. But it's not a tablet, it's a full computer with the ability to run the same software as any other Windows or Linux computer. All of that, with the repairability and upgradability that comes with the Framework ecosystem. Including support for Frameworks' brilliant expansion card system, so the ports can be exchanged quickly and easily. The frame and stand are made of anodized aluminum, and the covers are made of plexiglass (Black for the front, and you have the option of Black or Transparent for the rear cover, in case you want to show off the components without the need of a skin) The frame also includes magnets to attach accessories. Tradeoffs Like anything else in life, there are tradeoffs. In the spirit of full transparency, here are all the things I can think of in which the Flying Lotus is not the best at, and what you get in return. First, the Flying Lotus is not very 'lappable'. The classic clamshell design of laptops is hard to beat in that area (it's even in the name!). However, in exchange, you get a much more versatile mounting system. The included stand allows it sit on a desk at a much more ergonomic position in both landscape and portrait mode. The hook loops and tabs allow it to be hung from many places without mounts. From car, airplane, and train seats, to pegboards and racks. Second, the Flying Lotus doesn't have an integrated keyboard, trackpad, or touch screen. So you need to carry a keyboard and a pointer device (mouse, touchpad, etc). In return you get the ability to select any keyboard you'd like without having to awkwardly work around the one that's attached to the laptop. From mechanical keyboards, to ultra-portable keyboard/touchpad combos, or even the legendary IBM trackpoint integrated into this Lenovo keyboard. Additionally, the fact that the keyboard is not attached to the computer, gives you two extra advantages. It allows you to set it in a more ergonomic manner. Since the screen doesn't need to be at keyboard height anymore. AND it allows the computer to be mounted anywhere a tablet can be mounted. Particularly, the seat of most modern airplane seats, where the screen rests at a much more comfortable height and it leaves the table just for the keyboard. Third. The Flying Lotus is less portable than a tablet. But in return you get a full computer that can run all the apps and games that run in the full desktop versions of Windows and Linux. There are 2 in 1s and other portable computers that are lighter and can also run full desktop apps and games. However they tend to be slower, more expensive, and not repairable or upgradeable. Since the Flying Lotus uses Framework components, you can get hardware replacements or upgrades at reasonable prices, that are also quick to replace. Battery went bad? Get an $80 replacement, and change it yourself with just a screwdriver. Broke the screen? Get a replacement for $180, a screwdriver, and 5 to 10 minutes. Good luck doing that with any 2 in 1 or other non-Framework laptop. Plus you get compatibility with Framework's expansion cards, which allow you to configure the IO ports to exactly what you need. Lastly. The Flying Lotus does not have 3 things that the original Framework 13 laptop does. Those are Fingerprint reader, Integrated webcam/mic, and speakers (however it does have a headphone/mic jack, and bluetooth support). In the case of the fingerprint reader, in the original hardware, it it's attached to the keyboard module, so by removing the keyboard, we have to remove the fingerprint reader. As for the other two, it's mostly a space issue, and because there are viable alternatives. Though if that's the thing stopping you, use the Contact form to let us know which one you're missing, and if there's enough demand, we'll make a version with it. Ultimately, no machine is perfect, if you think the tradeoffs are worth it to you, feel free to order a kit. I make these in small batches. And they're shipped every few weeks.
