The inside of the bell has some rust, however its sound is still beautiful. Along with Sojiji Temple, it is the main temple (Daihonzan) of the Soto sect of Buddhism in Japan. The temple was founded by Dogen, and its principal deities are Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Buddha, and Amida Buddha. The temple's crest is the Kugasan Ryuyo crest (Kugasan Ryuyo crest, Kugasan Ryuyo Kurumon crest). Eihei-ji Zen Temple is famous for its bell.
