Description: Louisiana, Shreveport, Early History, Caddo Indians, Genealogy, 1985 Shreveport The Beginnings By Holice H. Henrici. Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette. 1985. Illustrated with b/w maps and reproductions. Probably the best of the books about Shreveport’s turbulent beginnings, with many transcriptions of original documents and accounts of early citizens. We are a river town, child of the Army Corps of Engineers, who sent Capt. Henry Shreve here in the 1830’s to clear out the Great Raft, a 90-mile long logjam that prevented navigation on the Red River. He and other speculators chose the site of the city and gambled on its growth. This is their story. [This bookseller’s family was in Shreves’es Port in the 1830’s. They gave a coming-out party for the youngest daughter and invited everybody in town. All 45 people came.] Softcover book in New condition. Book is bright, clean, tightly bound, and the pages are crisp and unmarked. Apparently unread. Cover is glossy and unmarked. 6 x 9 inches, 89 pages including index. [22983-2407] We wrap securely and ship promptly. Description and photographs show our actual book.
