Description: Ethiopian shotel. Mid 20th century. The Abyssinian Shotel goes back to 700 BC. Used by the Afar nomads. For defense, adornment and every day use. Carving wood, cutting hair to slaughter sheep. Dated to the 1940’s to1950’s. This is hand forged. With the makers mark on the blade. Most likely from salvaged iron. Double edged with a raised medial ridge. Made by an Afar nomad for an Afar nomad. This is not made for the tourists trade. Shows heavy use and patina. Sheath and strap is handmade and leather. Adorned with hand shaped aluminum rings. Black stained hard wood handle. Blade is double and needle point. Still very sharp. In good condition. In scabbard rom handle to tip is 24”. Blade is 18” long X 2 1/4” wide. Handle is 4 1/2” long. Comes with a plexi glass stand.
