Description: VG++ - NF. 1939 Morrow (book) / Grosset and Dunlap (jacket), stated 2nd printing (though it may be the old Grosset trick of using the original publisher’s existing plates and slapping the G&D logo on the jacket). Hardcover with dust jacket. I haven’t been able to definitively pin down the printing history for this title. On first glance, I assumed it was a Grosset & Dunlap second edition release. The book itself though, looks exactly like the Morrow first edition (down to the good quality paper even), which raised the possibility in my mind that the book and jacket might have been married at some point from separate copies. Regardless, it’s a very nice example of the title in either case - using all the design elements of the first edition. Written by the author who provided the basis for the classic Robert Mitchum film ‘Out Of The Past’ (based on the Geoffrey Homes novel ‘Build My Gallows High’).
