Israel Regardie, born Francis Israel Regudy in 1907 in London, was a significant figure in 20th-century psychology and Western esotericism. Deeply fascinated by mysticism from an early age, he became closely associated with Aleister Crowley, serving as his personal secretary and gaining profound insights into occult practices. Regardie is best known for his work with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, where he controversially published the order's secret teachings, making them accessible to a broader audience through works like The Golden Dawn, now a cornerstone text in modern occultism. Alongside his esoteric pursuits, Regardie was also a trained Reichian therapist, integrating Carl Jung's and Wilhelm Reich's theories into a unique therapeutic approach that blended psychological methods with mystical principles. His books, such as The Tree of Life and The Middle Pillar, remain influential, bridging ancient mystical traditions with modern psychological practices. Regardie’s legacy endures in both the occult and psychological communities, where his work continues to inspire and educate those seeking spiritual and personal growth. New Wings for Icarus: A Manual of Reichian Therapy by Israel Regardie offers a comprehensive introduction to the therapeutic approach pioneered by Wilhelm Reich, known as Reichian therapy. This modality focuses on the interplay between the body and the mind, positing that emotional traumas and psychological conflicts are often stored in the body as physical tensions or blockages. Regardie, who was deeply influenced by both Reich's work and his own background in psychoanalysis and occult studies, presents a detailed guide for practitioners and laypersons alike. The book explores key Reichian concepts such as the "body armor"—a term used to describe chronic muscular tensions that defend against emotional expression—and introduces practical exercises designed to dissolve these armors. Techniques like deep breathing, controlled movement, and vocalization are highlighted as tools to unlock repressed emotions, thereby facilitating emotional release and psychological healing. By providing a clear and accessible approach to Reichian therapy, New Wings for Icarus bridges the gap between complex psychological theory and everyday therapeutic practice, making it an essential read for those interested in holistic approaches to mental and emotional well-being.
