Description: Measures 11.5" wide, 5" high. This is an authentic polychromed Mayan rattle bowl with mammiform legs and designed to be used in Mayan fertility ceremonies. Fertility would be assured by a ceremony in which a meal would be prepared, served in this special bowl, shaken with the rattles, and then eaten. The rattles in the mammiform legs would imbue the food with fertile spirits and a woman would soon find herself with child! For a short while, during the mid twentieth century these 'authentic' Mayan bowls were made by the Salvadoran people as they had been made centuries earlier. It is often nearly impossible for an amateur collector to distinguish these, now, fifty plus year old Mayan replicas from pieces many centuries older. Each was handmade slowly and each was unique. There was no assembly line production. Changes in the political climate at the end of the seventies and the nationalization of many industries also ended the production of these artifacts. Extremely few were made - even fewer remain and appear on the marketplace. This is the most superb one we have ever seen. The mammiform legs are delightful and the look and presence of this rattle bowl is off the charts. It is an artistic treasure of great beauty and the piece presents sensationally.
