Original Listing Title: "c.1888 VICTORIAN WOMAN Antique Oil Painting Attrib-William Cutts - Baroque Frame"--- c.1888 Oil on Canvas - Baroque Frame Portrait of a Lady - Untitled / Unsigned Attributed to: William Malcolm Cutts (Listed Canadian Portrait Artist) [ FEATURES AND DETAILS... ] Painting Size: 12¼" x 15¼" Frame Size: 18" x 21"Visible Art: 11½" x 14½" This lovely original antique oil on canvas portrait depicts a courtly lady in fine attire with strings of pearls around her neck. The canvas is still nailed to its stretcher bars and mounted in its original baroque frame. The painting itself is unsigned, but it has an inscription on the back that appears to be as old as the painting: "B.C. 1888." The four original frame joint fasteners bear the impression: "CUTTS PATENT SEPT 21st 1886." Please refer to the patent picture shown here, which traces them back to William Cutts. In his patent application, he refers to himself as an artist residing in Toronto, Ontario, Canada -- indicating that this was William Malcolm Cutts, who moved to Canada from Great Britain and spent about 25 years primarily painting portraits before branching out into other genres. All of this to say: The painting, though unsigned, is quite likely by William M. Cutts himself. He was painting portraits during this time period (1888), including portraits from his imagination -- not just commissioned portraits of real people. And the fact that the hardware on the frame had only been patented two years earlier suggests that it was not likely yet in widespread use. All of which leads to this art dealer's conclusion that Cutts himself created the painting and mounted it using his own newly-invented hardware. As with any attribution, what you have is an informed OPINION. Please note that this painting is not returnable on the grounds that someone else's opinion disagrees with the seller's opinion. [ CONDITION... ] - Beautiful antique condition -- from a non-smoking environment.- The frame has minor loss of composition material -- especially in the narrow "beaded" portion of the decoration -- which has been touched up with gilded paint at various times in the past. - The artwork itself has small areas of paint loss as pointed out in the photos, especially on the lady's clothing.- There is also what resembles (serendipitously) a well-placed mole on the lady's face, but is actually a tiny puncture in the canvas. This painting is being sold as-is, and reasonably priced according to its value and condition. The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don't we all!?) It would be impossible to mention every tiny detail, so please expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that's not perfect and may need touch-up.Please be aware -- as with ALL antique and vintage paintings, prints, and other framed items -- that there is a potential (though unlikely) that the original paint on the frame may contain lead compounds, and (even MORE unlikely, though possible) asbestos-related materials. If this is a concern, one option is that you can apply a clear matte sealer so nobody comes in direct contact with the original paint on the frame.PLEASE SUPERSIZE ALL PHOTOS, AND ASK ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING/BUYING. I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER. [ ALL ABOUT SHIPPING... ]DON'T OVERPAY FOR SHIPPING: U.S. purchasers, you can choose from various shipping options in this listing.
