Bertil Vallien (born 17 January 1938 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a Swedish sculptor, ceramicist, glass artist and designer and is considered one of Sweden's most prominent and innovative contemporary glass artists. He is known for his mystical and symbolic glass sculptures that take the viewer on a journey through the subconscious. A pioneer in glass casting, Vallien developed the technique and created sculptures that absorb and reflect light, giving rise to his famous quote: "Glass eats light." Bertil Vallien was born in Sollentuna and educated at Konstfack in Stockholm, where he studied ceramics under Stig Lindberg. After his studies, he had an internship with the glass artist Erik Höglund at Boda glassworks. In 1963, he was employed at the Åfors glassworks, where he began experimenting with the technique of sand casting in glass, which opened up new artistic possibilities for him. Since then he has been active at Kosta Glasværk (now Kosta Boda) and has created sculptures such as boats, heads, maps, stars and crosses, where the glass plays an important role in the creation of various optical effects. Vallien's art glass has attracted international attention and has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including in St. Petersburg, Stockholm, London, Chicago, Kyoto, New York, Sydney and Boston. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Prince Eugen Medal for excellence in the arts, an honorary doctorate from Växjö University and the Visionary Award from the Glass Art Society (GAS).
