Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE THERE IS no more exciting story of modern times than T. E. Lawrence's vivid narrative of his Arabian adventure. In it is the thrill of battle, of secret warfare, of the bloody, inspiring, magnificent struggle for a desert empire. Almost single-handed, against the armies of the Turks and the myriad subtle dangers of the desert, Lawrence led the Arabs to victory and an immortal fame. SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM IS the whole story of his defeats and his victories, of his epic campaigns, almost unparalleled in the history of warfare; and beyond the stirring martial note is the odyssey of a man's soul, the reflective wisdom of a great and inspiring man. Lawrence of ArabiaTHOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE was born in 1888 at Tremadoc, Carnarvonshire, North Wales. It was an interest in archaeology that took him to Syria while he was still an Oxford undergraduate. After graduation he returned to the Near East where he studied Arabic, worked with several distinguished English archaeologists, and traveled around Mesopotamia doing various odd jobs.By the time of World War I, he had acquired an extensive knowledge of the language, habits, customs, and traditions of the Near East. It was this knowledge, combined with his amazing courage and stoicism, which enabled him to live among the Arabs as one of them, and to lead them in conquering the Turkish rulers.During the first two years of the war, Lawrence was a captain in the British Intelligence Department in Egypt. At that time the Arab tribes were in revolt against the Turks, but they were poorly equipped, disorganized, and fighting almost as much among themselves as they were against the enemy. Late in 1916 Lawrence applied for and got permission to go to the Hejaz. From then on he gave all of his enormous energy to the task of uniting the widely scattered tribes. Taking on the costume of Arab tribesmen, speaking their language and living among them, he planned an entire separate war against the Turks. The long, exciting story of Lawrence's days in the desert, of the surprise attacks he planned, of the victory over the Turks at Deraa, of all the battles, intrigues, retreats, and inconceivably long marches across the desert is told in SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM. Lawrence started this book while he was working with the Arab delegation to the Paris Peace Conference. As he wrote each chapter, he destroyed his notes. Then, when it was nearly finished, he lost almost the entire manuscript. Working from memory, he finished a second draft of nearly half a million words in less than three months. Although Lawrence had been made a colonel by the end of the war, in 1922 he enlisted in the RAF as a private under an assumed name. He was killed in 1935 in a motorcycle accident.
