All the band's best attributes combine in the very best way: their prog-rock orientation, melodic instincts, incredible harmonies, first-rate instrumentation, and catchy chord progressions. Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw balance each other wonderfully, without descending into the rancor that would come later. Dennis DeYoung's "The Grand Illusion" roars out of the gate, a fantastic, tuneful progressive rock song that both opens and closes the album and sets a thematic goal post for the rest of the songs. "Angry Young Man" was the album's second single, with a great melody, harmonics, and instrumentation. "Superstar," co-written by all the band's three chief songwriters is pithy, short, tuneful, and should have been a single. "Come Sail Away" ends the first side with the song's first single and most famous song. James Young's "Miss America" is probably his best and most well-known song, a driving rocker that is one of the best of an album of notable songs. "Man in the Wilderness" and "Castle Walls" (the first written by Tommy Shaw, the latter by Dennis DeYoung) are less commercial than the rest of the album, but the songwriting and instrumentation are up to its high standards. If you only own one Styx album, this should be the one.
