Tuvalu 2022 AURORA AUSTRALIS Southern Lights $1 1 Troy Oz Silver Color Proof OGP

Description: In Stock and Ready for Immediate Shipping!SOLD OUT Quickly at the Perth Mint! This gorgeous silver dollar depicts the Southern Lights in all their magnificent glory. Struck by the Perth Mint, these beauties are minted in one full troy ounce of pure silver, with a frosted cameo proof color finish. The shimmering and scintillating polar lights that appear in the southern hemisphere are known as the Aurora Australis. Galileo created the term Aurora to refer to the phenomena, in homage to the Roman goddess of the dawn. Unlike the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), the Aurora Australis can be viewed all year round! The haunting displays occur when electrically charged particles from solar storms enter the Earth’s atmosphere and collide with gas particles, creating spectacular curtains of light that ripple across the night sky in a symphony of color! The inspired design of this ethereal coin has been carefully crafted by the master technicians at the Perth Mint to capture the breathtaking beauty and wondrous energy of these Southern Lights. Our scene is set in the middle of Tasmania's Dove Lake, in the shadow of Cradle Mountain, where "light-hunters" gather to witness nature’s greatest light show. Auroras, Miracles of Nature Auroras can be found in both the far north and the far south. In northern latitudes, the aurora effect is known as the Aurora Borealis (or the Northern Lights), named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas. Auroras seen near the magnetic pole may be high overhead, but from farther away, they illuminate the northern horizon as a greenish glow or sometimes a faint red, as if the Sun were rising from an unusual direction. Discrete auroras often display magnetic field lines or curtain-like structures, and can change within seconds or glow unchanging for hours, most often in fluorescent green. The northern lights have had a number of names throughout history. The Native American Cree Indians call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits". In medieval Europe, auroras were commonly seen as a sign from God. Its southern counterpart, the Aurora Australis (or the Southern Lights), has almost identical features to the Aurora Borealis and changes simultaneously with changes in the northern auroral zone and is visible from high southern latitudes in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and South America. Auroras occur on other planets. Similar to the Earth's aurora, they are visible close to the planet's magnetic poles. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky that occurs in the high latitudes of the Arctic and Antarctic, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high atmosphere. The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind. Most auroras occur in a band known as the auroral zone, which is typically 3° to 6° in latitudinal extent and at all local times or longitudes. The auroral zone is typically 10° to 20° from the magnetic pole defined by the axis of the Earth's magnetic dipole. During a geomagnetic storm, the auroral zone expands to lower latitudes. The discrete auroras are sharply defined features within the diffuse auroras that vary in brightness from just barely visible to the naked eye, to bright enough to read a book by at night! Discrete auroras are usually seen only in the night sky, because they are not as bright as the sunlit sky. Obverse Our scene is set in the middle of Tasmania's Dove Lake, in the shadow of Cradle Mountain, where "light-hunters" gather to witness nature’s greatest light show, the magnificent Southern Lights. The legend AURORA AUSTRALIS, writ in the board of the rowboat seat near the bottom, indicates the theme. Reverse Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right.
